Subsea challenges – how to be prepared

Working in low visibility

Commissioning

Due to demand for new technology and solutions requested by operators, Scanmudring has developed, built and used more new equipment over the recent years than in the rest of the company’s 35-years long history. Following this strategy, we have contributed to cost-effective solutions for the development of many new oil & gas fields.

Seabed preparation for installation, including shaping profiles, levelling and spot trenching

Depending on factors like material, volume, precision requirements, visibility and current, Scanmudring has the equipment portfolio and experienced personnel to optimise your subsea installation project. We offer dredging units from 4” ROV dredges up to 20” dredges mounted on the Scanmachine in addition to Standalone dredges, Scanhub and bespoke soil removal tools. Also, various mechanical devices like ChainCutters, Cutter drums, grabs, claws, Mass Flow Excavators and other typical ”land-based” excavator tools can fit our Scanmachines and ScanHub. The variety in tools increases the likelihood for Scanmudring to find the correct and most efficient solution for your seabed intervention project.

The Scanmachines comes in 15Te, 20Te and 40Te with belts, positioning systems possibility for sonar, 3D modelling for exact targeting and tolerances for levelling/dredging and “plug and play” power outlets to fit most vessel or generator types.

Mechanical removal

Whether it is hard material or sticky clay, Scanmudring has various methods and tools to offer for route optimisation.

EDC Preparations

Scanmudring has been playing an active part of studies, offshore testing and innovation within subsea excavation equipment in Canada. Reports based on offshore demonstrations to the Petroleum Research of Newfoundland and Labrador has been published together with PRNL (Husky Energy and Exxon Mobil).

Canadian seabed, especially in cases concerning Excavated Drill Centres (EDCs) can have very challenging soil properties with hard-pan and compressed sand with hardness up to 5MpA and sticky clay. Our ScanROV Grab solution, as well as our powerful excavators, have a track record of removing the mass of this hardness in subsea condition and is an excellent option for EDC expansion or commissioning of new centres.

Trenching

The Scanmachine is used for trenching in several scenarios ranging from soft to hardened clay and rock/cement with a compressive strength between 1 and 100 MPA. Various cutters like cutter drums, Chain Cutters and other tools can be mounted on the machine for trenching to land or where soil conditions are challenging or where traditional trenching equipment for some reason have difficulties. The Chain Cutter mounted on the 40Te Scanmachine can make up to 2 meter-deep and 850 mm wide trenches in one swipe.

Trenching in areas where ordinary trenchers struggle due to:

  • Hard seabed material
  • Curves and shapes with high tolerance
  • Difficult access
  • Steep slopes
  • High mobilisation cost (the Scanmachines can be mobilised on most OCVs within 24 hrs)
  • Shore approach

Scanmudring has tools available for making cracks in hardened seabed or rocks > 80 Mpa using specialised cutting wheels.

Rock Placement

Scanmudring has specialised in rock placing and rock relocation on the seabed. In recent years, we have developed methods and tools on the 40Te Scanmachine for efficient levelling and relocation of landing pads for the spud cans for jack-ups. These operations are necessary in rig harbours when a jack-up with a different footprint is needed for P&A or well intervention and installation of Gravity Based Structures (GBS). The Scanmachine can relocate existing rocks eliminating the need for new rock dumps or perform accurate levelling (up to <+-2 cm) over large areas and dispose of excessive rocks at the seabed.

The Scanmachines can also be used for placing (or removing) rocks over pipelines, GPR covers or similar. The ability to use dredges, mechanical tools like grabs and specially designed tools put Scanmudring in an industry-leading position for subsea placing and relocation of rocks.

Rock Bolting

Scanmudring has invested in various drilling rigs to mount on our Scanmachines. The drilling rigs can drill holes up to 203 mm (up to 324 mm option) and 13 meters depth. The drilled holes can be cased or left as an open hole and then bolted for anchoring or for inserting rock splitters. Drilling time varies based on access to drill location, but typically 2-10 minutes drilling time per site. The lightweight aluminium mast is free rotating 360 degrees and can tilt 0-90 degrees. The drilling unit requires high-pressure water (445l/min @ 180 bar). The same drilling unit can also make core samples (103 mm core @ 2,3 m length) on uneven surfaces. A dedicated suction feature integrated with the drilling mast remove drilling materials from the hole. The Scanmachine can insert the bolts, and insert grout/epoxy for permanent fastening or rock splitting.

Rock Crops Removal

Scanmudring has developed a non-explosion method for rock corps removal with the use of hydraulically rock splitters. The Scanmachine drills holes, install the hydraulic rock splitters, provides power to the splitters and cracks/remove the subsea corps. Boulder Removal

Scanmudring has several grabs available for boulder removal pending on boulder size. Orange peel grabs, 10-ton GHD grabs, 3,2 cubic meter hydraulic operated orange peel grab system and various grabs or buckets to be mounted either directly on our ScanROV or Scanmachine. Also, several of our grabs can be operated with topside systems and deployed with umbilical from the vessel.

For more massive boulders, Scanmudring has solutions for rock splitting into manoeuvrable pieces. Eccentric or vibrating rippers can be used for cracking/splitting the boulder. In some cases, various cutting equipment can also be used for breaking boulders.

The 40Te Scanmachine has a 17-ton lifting capacity subsea for the relocation of boulders.

Drilling

Deepwater drilling for various purposes may utilise the Scanmachine, e.g.:

  • holes for anchoring
  • holes for blaster operations
  • core sampling

Drilling adds a new method to seabed intervention, making route selection and pipeline installation in nearshore areas with challenging seabed more flexible. The method is also more cost-effective as it reduces the need for traditional seabed intervention work, thus reducing the number of days involving a Marine Installation vessel.

IMR

In the past years, Scanmudring has seen a growing demand for bundled IMR services. There are significant efficiency gains when the same supplier can do both soil and seabed preparation, cutting and cleaning – with the same crew – in one integrated operation. This results in savings for customers increased efficiency offshore, and consistent quality in work delivered.

Scanmudring provides off the shelf and bespoke designed abrasive- and diamond wire cutting solutions. Our standard saws range up to 100”. Our wire cutting machines can operate with or without buoyancy at up to 3000-meter water depth. The diamond wire saws can be powered from both topsides with a separate HPU and umbilical or subsea via Work Class ROV.

Scanmudring has digitalised the control unit for increased control, safer cuts and higher efficiency.

The Scanmudring diamond wire saws are in-house design and can be used with extra wire magazines for increased wire length. Use of magazines makes it possible for us to deliver smaller sized saws than normally provided when you need to cut multiple tubular or through thick steel members. Increased wire length with also increased cut efficiency, safety and ability to do more cuts with the same wire.

Scanmudring has a range of industry-leading high-pressure pumps with capacity up to 188 litres/minute and 2000 bars. Typical tooling for cleaning/coating removal can be ROV cleaning guns, Cleaning Rings, Jacket cleaning tools, Coating Removal Tools or grout removal.

One provider – Dredging and Cutting,  performed by one team

Scanmudring has a history of completing many North Sea Decommissioning projects in very challenging conditions. Tasks typically range from debris control, mud mat removal, grout and drill cutting relocation and excavation for external cutting.

Much of the sediments removed before external cutting is related to creating access for the ROV to enter into the hole for connecting and powering the DWS. By connecting the DWS to the ScanMachine manipulator, it is possible to stand on the natural seabed level with the Scanmachine and preform the cut with less pre‐dredging.

Scanmudring offers dredging units from 4” ROV dredges up to 20” dredges mounted on the Scanmachine in addition to Standalone dredges, Scanhub and bespoke soil removal tools. Also, various mechanical devices like ChainCutters, Cutter drums, grabs, claws, Mass Flow Excavators and other typical “land-based” excavator tools can fit our Scanmachines and ScanHub. Various tools for various pile sizes and soil types

Our soil plug removal tools have different setups to accommodate most challenges for soil plug removal projects ranging from piles with an ID of 620 to large offshore wind piles of 5+ meters.

Soil plug removal is a neglected service for offshore wind foundation installation and decommissioning. With the incorrect tool, the soil plug removal can be a timely and costly exercise. We have given this more and more attention the past years. For sandy/loose materials Scanmudring can offer different suction solutions like integrated pumps on the tool, subsea suction unit and airlift, and high-pressure water. For more challenging seabed types like clay, chalk hard-pan or packed sand, a mechanical mixing of soil and water is the most efficient method. Scanmudring has developed soil plug removal tools with mechanical cutters and suction for consistent removal rates, specially designed for more massive piles with challenging soil conditions often found within offshore renewable- and/or decommissioning projects.

Cutting & Cleaning Services

In the past years, Scanmudring has seen a growing demand for bundled Decommissioning services. There are significant efficiency gains when the same supplier can do both soil and seabed preparation, cutting and cleaning – with the same crew – in one integrated operation. This results in savings for the customers, increased efficiency offshore, and consistent quality in work delivered.

Scanmudring has strengthened the organisation with several key persons within specific segments and offers expertise and a wide array of services within subsea cutting and cleaning.
